Dubious acomplishment

Huzza, I've managed a dwarven fortress in Dwarf Fortress for over a year of gametime without a single settler or immigrant starving to death. My farm is going strong, thanks to a Rube Goldberg two story bucket brigade I used to irrigate my field. Mushrooms for all. Does this entitle me to an honorary neckbeard? Now I must master lava. Do I dare attempt the magma piston technique?

I've been pausing it every 30 seconds or so to read and re-read wiki entries. I've doomed like 5 settlements before ever producing any food.

I didn't magma piston. I just made a stairway to a lava ocean, and accidentally tunneled into hell a couple times before making some ~safe~ lava tubes to channel a pond of lava into a forge. I made sure to engrave the lava tubes walls with masterpiece level art before flooding them, so the magma would have something nice to look at while it waited to heat my various metal stock n.n

Anyway, I am now a forgemaster of the deeps and the very burning blood of the world obeys my commands. Yeah, whatever. Next step is to diversify from being a one-crop settlement so my dwarves (I don't know why I write out dwarves when I always refer to the plural of dwarf, as relates to this game, as dorfs. Because come-on. Those guys are dorfs.) can do better than huddling in the shadows gnawing on cold mushrooms.

Scurvy is fashionable in my subterranean palace. It says "I've got so many steel mining picks that I'm not worried about getting trapped in a cave-in and having to dig my way out with my teeth."
