Gubernatorial debate tonight. Sitting republican Jan Brewer was quick to trumpet her triumph in passing that law that requires brown people to be arrested and deported, and friends of brown people to be jailed for not narcing on them. She said that people in Arizona don't feel safe in their homes! Because there are brown people about, you see. The democratic challenger pointed out that we are at a historic 30 year low for violent crime in the state, so no, no one is afraid in their home of marauding immigrants, but no one likes a guy who uses statistical fact, least of all libertarian candidates like our libertarian candidate who reiterated that people are fearful in their own homes of marauding immigrants. Only Jan Brewer was in favor of the law, out of the four candidates, but the others were very careful to not oppose it on grounds that it was racist or a police state wet dream. In fact, before opposing it they each used language to try to beef up the idea that they hate immigrants, and Spanish culture in general, and would propose their own laws to protect good white people from the ravages of the southern menace, because that sort of thing just plays well in Arizona I guess. Talk of helping out the Hispanic community is certain political suicide.

When did Arizona become populated with so many easily terrified folks? You should embark on a life of crime as "The Ghost" and run about in a hockey mask, screaming "Boo!" Considering how many Arizonians would drop dead at the merest sight of you, riffling their bodies for loose change should prove fairly lucrative.

It's mostly because the dominate, visible voting block in Arizona is made up of elderly mid-westerners who have retired to the southwest to live their declining years in a place where they don't have to shovel snow. Unfortunately, upon arrival they find that things are not at all like they were at home in Des Moines, so they do the logical thing and cast dispersions upon the Other.

On the up side, I'm sure someone could make a mint by opening a Culver's somewhere in the Phoenix metro area.

Oddly enough, I was born and raised in Arizona and am familiar with the Snowbird phenomena. Wasn't aware the goofy bastards and their terrible fashions had taken over, but that does make a lot of sense.
