What did you do, g-mail?

So, the new mandatory layout for g-mail can no longer reliably tell me at a glance whether I have any new mail or not. The count of new messages no longer appears next to the inbox link, and the new tabs don'y reliably show a count when a new e-mail comes in, and if many come in and are counted on the tab, I'll switch to that tab, read one mail. click the inbox link to get back to the inbox, and the count on the tabs will have disappeared, leaving no indication that I may have a whole stack of unread messages on that tab. Ugh.
