Truth from the mouth of rabbits.

"It's so batshit insane and clearly false at first I find myself wishing that it happened, like oh that would have been gloriouslyrediculous, especially the way they break things down all conveniently in some crazy right-wing fantasy of how the gays work.
Like this is clearly some deeply closeted homosexual right-wing blogger's sexual fantasy or something.
Then finally he could hold the hand of the boy he loves while still being totally angry and petulant against the liberal establishment!"

Liberal bias?
Nov. 1st, 2013 03:45 pmI see Van Jones is hosting Crossfire on his own today. I wonder if that's because the show's producers thought it would be insensitive to put conservatives on TV so soon after a tragedy. Given what gaffe machine's the right have been lately, though, maybe the responsible public conservatives are all in public speaking workshops to make sure they don't say something intractably stupid about the shooting.

Oct. 25th, 2013 04:04 pmHere's an article that posits that the "gamer" subculture doesn't have a distinct problem with violent sexist idiots, because the problem in the subculture looks exactly like the problem in the larger culture. Depressing!

Oct. 21st, 2013 03:51 pmHere's a neat ad campaign that is data-mining the collective unconscious. I'm sure the men's rights set would see this sort of thing as proof that misandry is so insidious it doesn't even show up in data!
Dream economies
Oct. 14th, 2013 03:08 pmMincome in Switzerland. I hope they get it, maybe it could spread to places who's GDP isn't based on international money laundering!
The first two chapters of Accelerando are exquisite. It moves fast, and a person needs a good basic background on the singularity and post-scarcity economic and moral theory to get into it. The sort of Horatio Alger future libertarianess of the protagonist is the only clumsy part, though perhaps his inexplicable longing for the cruel affection of his IRS dominatrix will eventually subvert, rather than enhance that ideological hiccup.

Oct. 3rd, 2013 07:21 pmEven though the majority of my social interaction--I being a mentally ill shut-in--takes place in online video games, I refrain from identifying myself as a "gamer" in any other online space. Its because of stuff like this. Gamers are by and large, awful people. Perhaps that is just because gamers are a subset of intent users, who are similarly awful people. Anyway, now I'm going to go back to my cooperative bank robbing simulator where I will be lucky to not hear an argument between two players about who is the niggerfaggot (you are, no you are!).

Oct. 3rd, 2013 03:43 amThe pessimistic lowest common denominator social Darwinist nightmare of the United States' right wing sent me out reading wikipedia articles to cure me of their glassy eyed free market boosterism. I found that Silk Road had been shut down by the Feds, and their beardcoin ceased. That made me smile even if I like the idea of a black market internet. The sort of idiotic libertarian smug that surrounded the place, or at least discussions of it on places like reddit, was insufferable. Of course it turned out that it was all run by a dude living in the US with no real hope of concealing himself from authorities. Most disappointing.
But that wasn't the best thing I found. The best thing I found came, as most things that make me feel good about society do, from Canada, circa the 1970s. If the <ahref="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mincome">mincome experement was ever proposed to be replicated anywhere in the US I imagine it's proposer would instantly be tried and executed for heinous sorcery by the conservative economics inquisition.

I bet Blanche could use this.

I need feminism help!
Aug. 22nd, 2013 02:39 pmI was reading one of my favorite feminism blogs, Skepchick.org, when I came across this sentence:
Is that true? How is it different? I have to wonder, because this quote comes from an article about the phenomenon of dudes sending unasked for dick pictures. I really relate to the article. I present as gay on several online dating sites and the ol' inbox just fills up with pictures of dudes' penises despite my profile explaining that I'm not looking for a quick hookup and don't want to see your dong, because I can pretty much imagine what it looks like, they all look the same, send a picture of your damn face instead.
I suppose my position is that I assume that the sort of genital-centric narcissism that causes gay dudes to send me their dick pictures is the same sort of thing that causes strait men to send pictures of their penis to women. This assumption, or need, that an object of their desire should admire their penis seems similarly objectionable whether you're a gay man or a strait woman.
"A gay man sending a picture of his penis (whether solicited or not) to another gay man is its own phenomenon, distinct from that of women being sent unsolicited peen pics."

Something that sounds like Dead Can Dance's Host of the Seraphim plays over slow panning shots cutting between improbably towering skylines, neon logo lit slums, interior of a flophouse where obvious junkies lay sprawled with brand named hardware dongles sticking out of their heads, cyberspace contrastingly pure and bright looking wall eyed and distant, wicked pointy looking ultralight aircraft being shot out of the sky and catching fire being silently shot out of the sky by a laser light show, finally a cut to some movie wimp asking "who are you" or "what are you" or some other cliche interrogative, quick cut to Chase and Malcom, Chase says "We're the Rastafarian navy." Closeup of Malcom racking a shotgun. The music suddenly goes into a dubstep style bass drop, cut to a green yellow and red painted orbital spacecraft flying past the camera in a StarWarsy outerspace shot. The dubstep transitions into a beatdown. Title card Neuromancer, 2014.

Aug. 16th, 2013 06:51 pmThe only thing that could make this trial better is if it took place in an election year. American right wingers so seldom have to answer for their gross human rights violations, this case could have a chilling effect on the US's international cruelty industry.

Aug. 13th, 2013 01:25 amI'm rereading Neuromancer because it's been a long time and there's a movie with that name that is supposed to come out next year. I hadn't known it when I first read it years ago, but an anecdote that one of the characters tells is the story of Johnny Mnemonic. Although somehow she manages to leave out the best part. She also seems to gloss over the bit where they get help from Ice-T and his crime fighting cyborg dolphin.

Jul. 24th, 2013 02:52 amI'm watching "Lars and the Real Girl", a 2007 film starring Ryan Gosling, and it just keeps making me cry. In the first 15 minutes, and all of the sessions with the doctor Gosling just so perfectly nails mannerisms that are painfully familiar to me. I'll bet he did some heavy research into shut-ins with anxiety disorders. The scenes where he's interacting with the doll that is central to the film I don't really relate to, its the unfamiliar less-grounded part of the film of course.
Realization
Jul. 19th, 2013 02:10 amIt recently came up that, despite being a crazy right wing wasteland in almost every way, Arizona does have medical marijuana legislation, and there are functioning dispensaries in Phoenix. I wonder if the next time I go to see my GP for an update on my medication (Yes I'm still hiding in my room 24 hours a day, yes, I'm still pretty anxious and depressed all the time, give me the antidepressants) should i inquire about a dispensary card? Is that even what I need in this state?
I doubt it's worth bothering to ask. I doubt it's inexpensive, or effective for what I've got. I've gone this long without ever trying it, and have no intention of ever smoking anything. Being a shut-in with access to medicinal recreational drugs could be less awful than being a shut-in without. But easing my own suffering in that way would probably give me guilt.
