I'm reading Exopraxia, the followup to Blindsight, a book that is available for free, and which I highly recommend if you can handle some existential science horror. I feel like if Ian M. Banks' culture series is emblematic of a European hyper-humanist brand of futurism, Watts' fiction is the beginning of a movement dedicated to depicting exactly the opposite future. The books have a post-cyberpunk aesthetic and are heavily concerned with transhumanism, neurology, and some (somewhat bogus sounding) evolutionary psychology in such a way that leads me to believe that the author is still scarred by childhood physical abuse. It's very dark stuff guaranteed to wash the taste of any given sappy techno-utopian TED talk out of your mouth.
